Mõnikord on häiriv tegur me endi sees.

On Friday, 9 October at 5 p.m. this year’s laureate of the Hotel Pallas painting scholarship, Gerly Piho, will open her solo exhibition “I Don’t Want to Be” in the small gallery of the Tartu Art House.
The exhibition analyses the drive to escape when running away is not possible. The result of all the struggling and writhing is the inevitable realisation that there is no escape from oneself.
“I took inspiration from a moment when, sitting still for a long time, due to discomfort I felt the urge to throw myself on the floor and fold in half. The reaction is similar in other situations: when facing something disturbing, we want to crawl away, to no longer be in it. Sometimes the disturbing factor is within us. Then we try to run away from ourselves, but that effort is in vain. Trapped inside our own consciousness and body, we writhe and stumble around; frustrations pile up, until we realise that one cannot get rid of oneself,” the artist explains.
Gerly Piho (b. 2004) studies painting at the Pallas University of Applied Sciences. In 2025, she was awarded a painting scholarship by the Hotel Pallas.
The Hotel Pallas painting scholarship was founded by the Cultural Endowment of Tartu, the Hotel Pallas and the Pallas University of Applied Sciences in collaboration with the Tartu Artists’ Union to support the development of painting and the creative output of students. The scholarship is awarded to a single student or a group of at most three students. In addition to receiving 2000 euros, an exhibition at the Tartu Art House is arranged for the winner(s). Previously the scholarship has been awarded to Maris Paal, Mia Melanie Saar, Caroliina Luhamets, Hedi Kuhi, Mari Frühling and Karolin Konrad.
Thanks to the Pallas University of Applied Sciences, Hotel Pallas, members of the scholarship committee, the Tartu Art House, Kaspar Tamsalu, lectors of the Painting Department, Katrin Maask and MA-23.
