Oulu Artist Union “Inner Landscapes”
Opening venue 31.07. 2013 at 18:00
The Artists Association of Oulu’s international exchange exhibition,”Inner Landscapes”, is part of an ongoing exchange/cooperation between Oulu and tartu artist associations. In June of 2012 the Tartu Artists Union had their exhibition “Hematoom” at the Artists Association of Oulu’s gallery, Galleria 5. The upcoming August exhibition is the Oulu’s Artists Association’s turn to exhibit in Tartu.
The exhibition is a unique opportunity for artists from Oulu to show their works internationally – this time in Estonia. The exhibition coincides with the 50th year celebration of the Oulu Art Association.
“Inner Landscapes” is a group show consisting of the artworks of twelve artists. The show has been juried by the chairman of the Tartu Artists Association Markus Toompere and the gallerist Indrek Grigor.
Exhibiting artists are: Kirsi Autio ♀, Harri Hemmilä ♂, Kaija Hinkula ♀, Hanna Holopainen ♀, Mari Jäälinoja ♀, Helena Kaikkonen ♀, Minna Kangasmaa ♀, Raija Korppila ♀, Anja Kurikka ♀, Daniel Nagy ♂, Hanna Schroderus ♀, and Tiina Vehkäperä ♀.
Exhibition works include paintings, graphic works, and installations.
The two daysTartu Artists´ Union had the chance to spend in Oulu last year, where far too short to get any idea of what Oulu art field is alike. The more surprised and troubled we were when Oulu artist union asked as to choose the works for their exhibition in Tartu, a selection which could only be done based on internet portfolios. But, we decided to take the challenge. Mainly because one could guess the reasons behind that request – first of all hope for the objective eye of the outsider, which of course is just a myth. The eye of the outsider is always dimmed by prejudice. So the question to which we don’t know the answer, is the selection of works on this exhibition an objective overview of the art produced in Oulu, or is it the curators idea of what kind of art one has to relate with the image of Oulu as an periferic northern city. An image where strange handicraft meets minimalistic design and it all is done with sincere love towards one’s creation.
