Ilmar Malin lõpetas 1954. aastal Tallinnas Riikliku Kunstiinstituudi, mille järel tegutses aktiivselt kunstniku, õppejõu, kunstielu ja -hariduse eestkõnelejana oma kodulinnas Tartus. Kunstiajaloos räägitakse temast peamiselt kui ühest järjepidevamast eesti sürrealistist. Tegelikkuses on Malini kunstipärand palju eripalgelisem ja mitmekülgsem, andes ka aastakümneid hiljem võimaluse taasmõtestada tema loomingu tähendusvälja.
Näitus “EluLõng” keskendub maalidele, joonistustele ja installatsioonidele, milledes peegeldub Ilmar Malini elutunnetus ja -lugu. Nii moodustavad suure osa ekspositsioonist portreed inimestest, kellega kunstnik kokku puutus või kes iseloomustavad olulisi arenguetappe tema loometeel. Ilmar Malini sümbolistlikku ja religioosset kunstikeelt kajastavad filosoofilise alatooniga tööd maailmaruumist, elu algusest ja lõpust. Näituse keskmes on taasloodud installatsioonid “Organon” ja “EluLõng”.
Ekspositsioon koondab töid erakogudest, Eesti Kunstimuuseumi, Tartu Kunstimuuseumi, Eesti Kirjandusmuuseumi, Viinistu Kunstimuuseumi ja SA TÜ Kliinikumi kogudest.

The artist Ilmar Malin (1924-1994) would have celebrated his 90th anniversary this year. The exhibition is both a tribute to the artist as well as a retrospect of his oeuvre.
Ilmar Malin graduated from the State Art Institute in Tallinn in 1954 and afterwards worked as an artist, teacher, promoter of art and education in his home town Tartu. The art history looks at him mainly as one of the most persistent Estonian surrealists. In reality, Malin’s artistic legacy is much more diverse and multifaceted, and his works present a chance to redefine their meaning still today, decades later.
The exhibition “Thread of Life” focuses on paintings, drawings and installations, reflecting Ilmar Malin’s sense and story of life. And so a big part of the exposition is made up of portraits of people whom the artist encountered or who characterise important stages of development in his creative path. Ilmar Malin’s symbolistic and religious artistic language is reflected in his philosophically inclined works about the universe, the beginning and end of life. At the centre of the exhibition are re-created installations “Organon” and “EluLõng” (“Thread of Life”).
The works on display have been acquired from private collections as well as from the collections of Estonian Art Museum, Tartu Art Museum, Estonian Literary Museum, Viinistu Art Museum and Tartu University Hospital.
